ACTION LEARNING
Action Learning is a process that involves a small group working on real problems, taking action, and learning as individuals, as a team, and as an organization. It helps organizations develop creative, flexible and successful strategies to pressing problems. (World Institute for Action Learning)
Action Learning (AL) was devised by Reg Revans in the 1950’s. He believed that peer groups were one of the most effective ways of solving complex issues.
The aim of an Action Learning Set (ALS) is to help members solve their own problems with the support of each other by offering a different perspective on real issues. Important skills are developed including listening, questioning, empathy and giving (and receiving) feedback. Members widen awareness by listening to others view and ideas. A coaching model is used.
Action Learning Sets have both individual and organisational benefits. For the individual there is the opportunity to explore complex areas of daily work where peers have some knowledge or experience to help. For the organisation there is the benefit of cross-functional working, learning from each other and the exchange of good practice, whilst developing staff and leaders.
